Thomas Albdorf's Career Highlights

  • Won the ING UNSEEN Talent Award 2016
  • One of British Journal of Photography‘s 'Ones to Watch' in 2014

In his practice, Thomas Albdorf often works with the most commonplace visual clichés - renegotiating image concepts that seem familiar to everybody. For his presentation at UNVEIL’s booth, Albdorf selected works from his oeuvre that show flowers - one of the, if not even the most depicted subject in art par excellence.

All the works are linked together by their artificiality - one print might actually show a physical flower, but the surrounding scenario is constructed in the studio and in software; another print shows a sculptural accumulation that only loosely resembles a flower. Other subjects are either partially or entirely constructed by AI.

The prints are all linked to a video work that shows an endless loop of a bouquet of flowers rebuilt by AI; the entire presentation aims to discuss what „visual representation“ can stand for in a post-photographic world.

After working as a Graphic Designer and Art Director, Thomas Albdorf (1982) graduated in Transmediale Kunst at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna in 2013. Albdorf‘s main interests are photography and sculpture – in particular, the intersection area between both practices, their shifting perceptions, the contemporary status quo of the photographic image and the decontextualization caused by internet distribution.

In 2014, Albdorf was selected as one of British Journal of Photography‘s 'Ones to Watch' and he won the ING Unseen Talent Award in 2016. He had his first institutional solo show "Room With a View" in 2018 at FOAM Amsterdam, followed by his solo show "Mirror Mirror" at Museum Folkwang in Essen, Germany in 2019. His work has been exhibited throughout galleries in Europe & the United States, and he has been featured/interviewed in magazines such as The British Journal of Photography, The New Yorker, The New York Times, The Guardian and many more.
